Red crochet earrings and a question

Here is one of my latest creations:

Red lace earrings with a little pearl bead.

I used lace weight merino yarn and a 0.75mm hook to make these.

They were a fast project and I love having some bigger earrings that are really light.

~

Now for the question:

How do you stiffen your crochet projects?

I've tried sugar starching which has worked really well but I don't want to that with earrings - I have visions of me being outside wearing my crochet earrings and having bees chasing me :)

These particular earrings I stiffened using clear nail polish after reading about it on Pinterest but I don't like it too much - the smell of the nail polish took a whole week to disappear.

Have a wonderful weekend everyone!

  1. Can't help with the stiffening (will watch with interest), but do think your ear rings are beautiful, so pretty and delicate :) xx

  2. I have heard that you thin down glue with water and apply that, I know there are spray stiffeners. I tried to stiffen crochet bowls once with the sugar solution, it was a mess and they were sticky.
    Good luck,

  4. Beautiful earrings! You can either stiffen it with a starch solution or glue... I only have experience with starch, it gives great results!

  6. I have seen stiffening done with watered down PVA glue. I looks horrendous when it is wet and all blocked out but it dries clear. If the project was quick, try one and let us all know how it went! Jo x

  8. Lovely earrings!!:) I don't starch any crochet pieces and have rarely starched clothes too. For clothes, I use a branded instant starch available here.

  11. beautiful earrings. I haven't had to stiffen before. I know read something on Attic 24 about stiffening but I can't remember what she used.

  12. I just use spray starch and iron my doilies. I think it would work for your earrings too. They are gorgeous!

  13. Beautiful earrings, I love them :)

About the stiffening I can't help you. I don't stiffen any of my crochet (I'm too lazy...), I just iron it.

    Have a wonderful weekend, Elizabeth!

  17. What? 0.75 mm hook? You are brave and patient! The earrings turned out great! Yes, sugar syrup might attract bees or any other sweet loving insects. I used fevicol (white glue)+water solution for stiffening crochet snowflakes last year.
    Have a wonderful weekend, Elisabeth!
    Hugs,
    Anna!

  19. Beautiful earrings Elisabeth! Probably spray starch would do the job for you - if you can find one that doesn't have a strong smell! All the best with it. Joy x

  21. Super nice earrings!! ♥ About your question, I take two different things for starching: Spray starch for softer things like doilies, and laundry starch for little ornaments. Its a thick white liquid in a bottle and available in the drugstore. E.g. this one:
    http://www.hoffmanns.de/produkt-waesche-steife.php
I put some of this starch in a small bowl, put the ornament in it and let it absorb. Then press a little (not too much) and then block it. The ornament becomes nicely stiff :-).
And now I have a little surprise for you, Elisabeth!! You've got an award .-). Please look here:

  22. Really cute earrings. I use a stiffen spray or mudge pudge ??not sure how to spell it) in the back of my project. It is non toxic so the smell goes away after it dries. :) good luck :)

  24. I use only some hair spray strong hold to lightly stiffen my crochet jewelry. I don't like any of the other systems. Try with hair spray (protect the metallic parts). Your earring won't become too hard. I don't like that effect.
    Hugs,
    Rosa
