I really like doilies.
This is the newest one I've made.
I bought the magazine just for this pattern, I loved the hearts that appear towards the edge :)
I like making doilies so much that I don't even mind working in the round to make one...something that I always used to avoid.
So many people seem to dislike them but I see so many beautiful designs out there I can't help but love them. There are lots of wonderful vintage patterns you can find free online and I love to buy magazines with doily patterns, even if I never make them, just to look at them. Do you do that too, or is it just me? ;)
Do you prefer to work from charts or a written pattern? Here in Spain, most crochet magazine have charts alongside the written pattern. When working in the round, I prefer charts, they are easier for me to follow and in my case they leave less room for misunderstandings.

When it's cold out is so nice to be at home, warm and crocheting :)
I made this doily with size 10 cotton crochet thread and a 1.5mm hook and this is the perfect project to show why I love to block my crochet work:
I'm thinking of taking this doily and turning it into a cushion cover.
I'd use some upcycled fabric and sew the doily on to one of the side. Do you think it's a good idea?

I love making doilies but have been using yarn lately. I would rather follow written pattern than charts cause I lose my place on a chart. I use a 1.65mm hook with size 10 thread.

ReplyDeleteIt's stunning!! I like the patterns I see, but I always think: where am I going to use it? So I hesitate to make them...Your idea of sewing it on a pillow cover is a great idea!
ReplyDeleteI love doilies and collect them from charity/thrift shops or junk/antique shops, but I've never made one. Yours are absolutely gorgeous Elisabeth and I'd love to have a go. I might look online to see if I can find a pattern that's easy enough for me to follow.

It's really beautiful. I love delicate crocheted items like this but haven't made many myself yet. I would love to be able to crochet from a chart but I find it confusing. Most of what I've made has been from a written pattern.

ReplyDeleteI love doilies, too...I have lots that my grandmother made (whe was a "chain crocheter", never without a hook in her hand). In knitting, I can read both charts and written patterns, but prefer the written instructions because they seem to take less brain power for me! :-)

ReplyDeleteYour doilie is lovely. I have made a few too. I learned to crochet and work from written patterns. I still prefer them but maybe just because it is what I used first.
ReplyDeleteI have a massive collection of patterns for doilies from 1930s to the modern day. Yours is just stunning, I haven't done one for years maybe its time to start again.
ReplyDeleteI can't imagine even holding a crochet hook that small. Your cushion idea is worth doing. I find charts very useful to look at if I can't quite understand a particular written instruction.

I have never got into making doilies myself but that doesn't stop me from being attracted to them - arthritic hands don't go so well with fine work such as this - and I think as a cushion this will be absolute magic, great idea, I can see it now! I love your doily Elisabeth, so very pretty and I admire your skill in making it. I have never made anything like this, although I have some super fine cotton for making doilies that I was going to make some snowflakes with, but never got time to, so perhaps you will inspire me to have a go someday! If not, I will just come and look at yours!! xx

ReplyDeleteWhat neat crochet work. I find I use a mixture of both pattern and chart, and if complicated draw my own little chartlets in a kind of crochet shorthand I've developed. I do this when taking work with me on journeys by train. I would not like to lose my proper pattern. Would you mind if I used your before and after blocking pictures in my crochet classes?

I only hate blocking, haha, but it's neccessary. And my problem is that I don't have many places where I could lay doilies. I get along with charts and written patterns but I prefer charts. And I think your new doily would look great on a cushion :-).

This is a beautiful doily Elisabeth, and I think making it into a cushion would be a great way to show it off. I like doilies too, but have never made one. I've printed off a snowflake doily from Ravelry that I'd like to try sometime soon (knit pattern). Wendy x

ReplyDeleteOh I love that doily! I think it would make a great cushion! I think I just love to collect patterns rather then make anything! I am still struggling with my knitting and crocheting, eventually I will get there!! I better I have tons of patterns to make! haha!
ReplyDeleteHi Elizabeth, I share your love for doilies. Some people think crochet doilies are old-fashioned, but not me. But then a lot of old-fashioned and vintage things are back in fashion again!
ReplyDeleteI prefer symbol charts/graphs when making doilies, but I now have learned to make them from vintage written patterns as well.
The doily you made is very sweet, I think it will look adorable on a cushion cover.
